Dear Oprah...
I know it's been a long time since we talked, but I'm relenting and I'm putting my two cents forth about this whole alleged snub you're so huffy about.
As I understand the story, you and your "entourage" whirled over to the Hermes store in Paris recently. The gang arrived at 6:45PM (after closing hours? I dunno...) To your shock and dismay, you were denied entrance. Howls of outrage, tinged by calls of racism and other biases now abound in the celeb-media. You must have your spin doctors on quite a retainer.
Oprah darling, as you and I well know, these French "chic" stores are bum-lickers extraordinaire if you have the coinage to spend on $100 coffee mugs, and other stupidly overpriced kitch, but they had a legit reason for having their doors closed: they were preparing a "private public relations function" inside.
Were the French motivated by racial bias in denying you entry? Maybe, maybe not. The French have a remarkably diverse ethnic population, but they jealously guard their secular principles. I have my own take on the matter.

Sure, you might be a legitimate media icon, deserving of awe and respect and celebrity across North America, but I consider it the height of hubris for you to think that your visage (and presence of your "posse") will open doors anywhere just because you wish it.
The store was closed and I'm pretty sure it would have remained closed even if some other "celebrity" with paler skin had pounded on the door.
Yes, the brown-nosing types will bend over backward for anyone with a platinum card, but charges of racism tell me that your ego and sense of place in the order of things are very, very much out of whack.
Take the high road, Oprah darling. The store has apologized for being closed when your whims took you there. They reserve the right to close and open as they see fit.
Just let it go.
And next time, call ahead.

I really dislike celebs. sometimes. Oprah is a person -- albeit a generous one who does much good -- but a person nonetheless. She is not a god. She should not be treated as one.
Oprah? You want a $400 Hermes scarf? Order it online, send an assistant or go in during REGULAR HOURS. Oooh, or maybe call first? Don't expect people who get paid little more than minimum wage to stay at work late and away from their families because YOU want to shop at a moment's notice..

i read the article in today's newspaper, and was appalled- why must everything become a race issue? i mean, really- it wasn't oprah's right to expect the employees of hermes to see her coming, banish the peasants from the store and greet her with rose petals and champagne.
it's probably a good thing i don't work there, as i probably would have read her the riot act regarding her inflated sense of self.
Yeah. And leave it to the French to deal with the Diva of American Television in the most blatant, rude way they could think of. Gotta love French courtesy (omg is that an oxymoron?).
I understand that A&E or someone is doing the "Most Powerful Person in America" and they're putting her up there with Einstein (who I thought was European, shame on me), various Presidents, scientists, etc. Now THAT scares me.
As one who has been the direct recipient of racism on many occasions, I do not take the subject lightly. It is wrong no matter when or where or to whom it happens. That said, the race card is played too fast and too often for my tastes. I would rather see steps taken to expose and embarass anyone stupid enough to still carry on the distasteful practice. That is much preferred to a set of whining and bitching and woe is meing. Here's an idea: If the store does not want my money there, SHOP SOMEWHERE ELSE. Of course, casually mention it on America's most suggestive show that you were turned away and all the Oprah cult members will follow your lead.
I think Oprah needs to speak to Bill (in his own world of issues) to get a grip and to take some responsibility for one's own actions and decisions instead of the easy way of blaming "the man".
If a Black Billionaire woman cannot cope, how is she to inspire all those welfare collecting, food stamp trading single mothers out there?
