For the football curious...

I've been asked to post something that will explain the differences between Canadian football and American football.

Lazy sod that I am, I elected to link to someone else's careful research rather than do all that work myself.

Couple of minor errors in the comparison (and they're really really minor points):

On a kickoff, the ball is live. That is to say the kicking team may recover the ball (which is why you have onsides kicks).

"The official time clock runs continuously unless stopped when a time out is called by a team, or the referee stops play to allow opposing teams to align properly after a play."

Not entirely accurate. The game clock stops after a player goes out of bounds or after an incomplete pass, but the 45 second play-clock keeps running.

(After reading the NFL rulebook I'm confused about this one. It may be a newer rule - newer than when I was a complete football freak in high school - that the game clock restarts after an incomplete pass when the players are set. The way I remember it, the gameclock doesn't restart until the ball is snapped, but, the NFL rulebook is a bit confusing).

"With a constantly running game clock, a team that is behind by a significant margin may not realistically expect to win even though half a quarter may still remain." See above.

Just a minor little thing, and if I don't fully or correctly understand it then I wouldn't expect the author of the website to get it either.

This is a bit of a dated comparison, so it's not current with all the rule changes and I wasn't going to "fine tooth comb" it.

Yeah, I'll give you that, Ma. I mean, I don't get hockey and barely understand football. Cricket (the game) scares me.
