Dooced? To Blog or Not to Blog?

That is indeed the question.

Word reached these shores that someone who was dooced a little while back (with cause) is still blogging unrepentantly.

If you wind up getting Dooced, should you continue to blog? I therefore open this debate to my loyal readers.

Is it: "hey, its my blog and I'm gonna do whatever I like..."?

Or is it more like someone who drives drunk, has a very nasty accident and then continues to drive under the influence?

I'm not taking a side here...I want to see which way the wind is blowing.

That is such a hard question.

That's kinda why, when I blog about work, I try to make it as general as possible, and not air gripes in full public view.

I think it really depends on the type of work one does but being a student of relaity shows, I can lend some insight. If the blog specifically identifies items that only an insider would note, and this villifies or embarrasses the target, then I am pretty sure it is actionable as libel. If this information includes facts about the company that would not otherwise be known, then breach of security and industrial espionage could also be claimed. In today's sue-happy culture, not to mention the scandals of Enron and MCI and such, companies have a right to try to protect their privacy by any means possible.

That said, I do say there must be some sanity applied to the equation. I hate the people I work with is something that can be overheard in any restaurant or bar and should not be actionable. I hate this person in charge of this item on this project who does nothing but suck up to insert-name-here should be highly actionable under the law. So, I am saying that like most laws, the interpretation has to be watched. There is a simply way to avoid the hassle though.

Don't be stupid. Don't be Dooced!

i occasionally blog about my former workplace, but when i was there, i restrained myself immensely, mostly because i knew my boss liked to check in.

once dooced, i think i'd only blog about work under deep cover (as in a complete and total blogger witness protection program type alias).

If I got dooced, as in fired, I would hope I'd learn a lesson. This is why I specifically don't write about work, rich material mine regardless...

Keep blogging? Yes. Blog about work? Hell no.

I try to keep my work rants to a minimum, including not identifying myself, my place of employment, or even the state I'm in. Just the occasional "damn these people I work with are stupid" and I'm okay.
